Digital Marketing Literature Is All Over The Place
The Internet is now full of information which seems important one day and is forgotten about the next.
There’s rarely any long-term value, making strategic thinking more difficult than ever. So, like a pile of paper in front of a fan ideas are constantly thrown around like garbage.
“We have lots of bricks, but I don’t know what the building looks like yet.”
This is the feedback from Creative Director Don Draper as his team works toward a crucial pitch – they’re creating a heap of pretty good ideas but he’s not convinced there’s a clear vision in there.
For me, this is where digital marketing so often falls apart – there’s some great thinking but rarely a vision.
Digital Marketing + Vision = Method vs Madness
Having worked in digital marketing for a while now I can relate to Don’s frustration… there’s so much information, so many blog posts and articles, so often the same old points are made over and over again, and my Twitter feed sounds like a broken record.
So anyway… if we use Don’s analogy then every blog post and news article is like a brick of information,
it’s just that they’re all scattered about in a brickyard so I have to work out for myself what to do with them.
At best I could make a barbecue, maybe.
Although I work in an office so how would I know how to make a barbecue?
Either way, I can’t live in a brickyard or a barbecue.
I’d really prefer to build my digital marketing dream house in the most thriving area of the city!
Is that asking too much? I hope not…
