Introduction to the Digital Marketing Book

The Method

If you’ve worked in an office for five minutes, or even if you haven’t, you’ve probably heard the phrase “there’s a method to the madness” or it’s partner in crime “it’s organised chaos”?

Both are usually preceded by the words “Don’t worry…” - well they make me worry!

So with Method vs Madness I plan to put an end to them – for digital marketers at least.

Here’s a couple of takeaways from this page for you…

Why Can’t It Be An Organised Method?

This cartoon from The Oatmeal is one of my favorite things on the Internet…

  • Firstly, because I can relate to it
  • Secondly, because it’s delivered so well… even despite the dramatic ending
  • And thirdly, because it’s pretty much timeless

The cartoon does have a glaring logic-gap however – I’ve worked on both the agency and client sides of the fence and I’ve seen agencies present horrifying concepts just as much as I’ve seen clients demand, approve and pay for them.

With Method vs Madness I’m hoping to help prevent situations like these.

In this case the agency wasted a heap of time making the Internet worse… any customer who saw the site would have left immediately, and the client would have gone out of business… so not the ideal outcome.

Wrecking The Internet Sucks!

The Digital Marketing Book will write down the rules of awesome digital marketing so you’ll never find yourself wrecking the Internet for everyone.

We’re going it top-down like classic Cadillac drive. We’ve worked out the chapters and it’d be great to get your opinion. Next we’ll write an intro for each of them and once that’s done we’ll get writing the rules.

Also like a Cadillac cruise we couldn’t possibly go it alone. We want the book to be a team effort so you can come along for the ride with us – we’ll be like the DJ and you can tell us what you wanna hear.

Anything that makes the book we’ll give you full credit for.

The Book Is Methodically In Progress… Skeleton First

Now I can annoyingly be something of a perfectionist at times…
At least in my own mind and only when I want to do a perfectionist-like job of something – but I’ll happily blame that for making me a slow starter on things like creative writing at school, painting fences and this website book.

For the first couple of those things I created a procrastination busting technique I like to call the skeleton!

For creative writing that would mean plotting out the story in bullets first.
For fence painting it meant doing all the framing first.
And for both it means filling in the rest later with help from anyone willing to help out.

So for this website book it means I’ll be writing down the gist of everything first, like headings and rules.
And then over time I’ll fill in the details, hopefully with a heap of input from anyone interested in helping to write it.

This means the book will never be “finished” as such, it will forever be a work in progress…

But so is digital marketing.
